It's common practice that people don't book hotels on the islands in advance. Usually, the boats are greeted by people trying to rent rooms (Hey, it's part of the experience). They are usually clean and have a bathroom in the room. However, I totally understand if some of you would prefer to get confirmed reservations and are welcome to do so.  For those who absolutely need air-conditioning, you had better get reservations in advance. The only island where I would consider getting air-conditioning myself is Zakynthos.  It's pretty humid.
